Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. - At first glance, last year's attacker appears to be made of lumps, a square jaw down front, stone eyes that can strike fear into young people.

But for Staff Sgt. Eric Rostamo, an award that means more than scaring students or making them scream louder. It's about turning America's youth into a combat-ready force.

Still, it's not hard to see Rostamo shouting at hundreds of conspirators as they get off the bus on the first march, or marching in black, his fiery eyes covered by a dark hat.
If Hollywood wanted to cast a sergeant - he's their man. But being a drill sergeant is about more than hot characters on camera, he said. All the bravery in movies never turns civilians into highly skilled warriors. "Such students don't learn," he said.

"I never heard him complain," said his brother, Staff Sgt. Ryan Rustamo, a recruiter in Buffalo, Minnesota. "Being on a drilling order can be tougher than being deployed because even though you're physically home, it's only for a few hours. My brother handled it well," he said.
The days are long, and the hours are taxing on the whole family, said the practice keeper. Without Nicole, none of this would be possible. He supports her unconditionally, even going above and beyond her role in the family leadership role, she said.
"I don't know how she does it. She's the backbone of our family," Rustamo said. It is difficult. In [basic combat training], our ranks do what it takes for senior soldiers, because families suffer because of the long hours.

"[Driller officers] are responsible for the sons and daughters of our country," he said. He added that it is a role that requires excellence and he does not take it lightly. He said: "This is the greatest responsibility that anyone can give. I consider civilians to be the next generation of fighters."
He said the new soldiers will remember their drill sergeants forever. "The drill officers have to attend for a few hours, because for the recruits, they are the first representative of the corps," he said.
Within months, military recruitment could be anywhere in the world, from combat vehicles in the desert to protecting military assets in factories. First of all, they trained at Fort Leonard Wood, including training in the Missouri Ozarks. Rustamo represented this year's Sports Sergeant Major.

"I wanted to bring the [DSOY] title back to Fort Leonard Wood," he said. "I didn't win it for me -- 'Eric Rostamo' -- I won it for all the trainees. I'm not going to be [at Fort Leonard Wood] forever, so that means the world will go on. Bring that honor back there."
"The department and the community are very proud of Rustamo," said Command Sgt. Maj. James Breckinridge, assigned commanding officer to Fort Leonard Wood. "There's no doubt in my mind — and I'm not trying to predict the future — but there's no doubt in my mind that he's going to reach the top of America."

In about 60 days, Rostamo and his family will be moving from the Midwest so he can take on another role -- serving as a training officer at Fort Utis, Virginia, where he will be on everything Advise senior officials on the matter. Related to initial training.

Breckinridge said: "When you sit across the table with a four-star general, et cetera, and advise them on all the things that the U.S. military is responsible for training, it should not be lightly be arrested." "It's a big deal," he said.
